Milka – A Film About Taboos

Inspired by a novel by the late Finnish author Timo Mukka, this uncomplicated narrative delves into the events that unfold when Milka (Irma Huntus), a girl on the verge of adolescence, becomes pregnant by Ojanen (Matti Turunen), a rugged fieldworker. Milka’s mother, who had dreamed of marrying Ojanen herself, faces a life-altering situation due to her daughter’s condition. Located in the serene Lapp region of northern Finland, the film captures stunning landscapes accentuated by the area’s remote charm. A tranquil atmosphere permeates the film, with leisurely conversations paired with extended silences, emphasizing the bond between the characters and the natural world, further highlighted as young Milka recites poetry amidst the beautiful outdoors. Ultimately, the destinies of Milka and her mother hinge on the choice Ojanen makes by the film’s conclusion. Watch it now. “Milka – A Film About Taboos (1980)” is available for free streaming online.
