Miss Hokusai

In the year 1814, the bustling city of Edo, now known as Tokyo, is home to the distinguished artist Tetsuzo. Known for attracting clientele from across Japan, Tetsuzo persistently crafts impressive artworks within the cluttered chaos of his house-studio. His masterpieces range from an expansive portrayal of Bodhidharma on a 180-square-meter paper to delicate sparrows painted on a tiny grain of rice. Tetsuzo’s third daughter from his second marriage, the bold and talented 23-year-old O-Ei, shares in her father’s gifts and determination. Often stepping in to paint unbeknownst to clients, her uncredited work is occasionally so striking that it stirs trouble. Featured in “Miss Hokusai” (2015), their dynamic is captured perfectly; “We’re father and daughter; with two brushes and four chopsticks, I guess we can always manage, in a way or another.” Watch the captivating tale streaming online, offering a window into their artistic journey.
