Mothering Sunday

In the film “Mothering Sunday,” set in 1924, we follow Jane Fairchild, a maid working for the Niven family. She gets a rare day off to enjoy Mothering Sunday, while her employers attend a luncheon celebrating their neighbor Paul’s engagement to Emma Hobday. Relishing her freedom on a surprisingly warm spring day, Jane has no family to visit. For nearly seven years, she has been entangled in a blissful, guilt-free affair with Paul, who, like the Nivens, comes from England’s aristocratic circles. Meanwhile, Jane is an orphan. With the Nivens away, this marks a rare opportunity for Jane and Paul to meet openly in his room. However, it is also the day they must part ways as lovers, setting in motion Jane’s personal transformation.
