Mrs. Soffel

Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century Pittsburgh, “Mrs. Soffel” draws from a true story. Peter Soffel runs a high-security prison, while his wife, Kate, played by Diane Keaton, is known for reading Bible passages to the prisoners, despite her poor health. During her visits, she encounters the Biddle Brothers, Ed and Jack, portrayed by Mel Gibson and Matthew Modine, both facing execution for their crimes of murder and robbery. Ed’s charm and a campaign of letters to editors earn him notoriety and captivate Kate, who feels stifled in her mundane marriage. Over time, Kate finds herself irresistibly drawn to Ed and considers assisting in his daring escape. Watch “Mrs. Soffel (1984)” online.
