Nafas

As children, our world is simpler and less burdened by life’s complexities, yet the things that matter to us hold deep significance. For Scruffy, a young girl from a humble countryside background, excelling in her studies is crucial because she aspires to become an asthma doctor to save her father’s life. Her determination contrasts with the looming presence of her grandmother, who always seems to be waiting with a comb to tame her hair. The concepts of death and war are distant, unknowable ideas; the former is an intangible notion, while the latter is merely a word uttered on the radio. Nevertheless, as Scruffy experiences moments of joy and sorrow, the film “Nafas (2016)” beautifully unfolds the chaotic years of Iran’s history, introducing viewers to the Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War from a child’s perspective.
