Night Will Fall

When Allied forces liberated the Nazi concentration camps during 1944-45, the horrific scenes they encountered were captured by army and newsreel cameramen, exposing the world to the grim reality for the first time. Using footage from British, Soviet, and American sources, Sidney Bernstein of the Ministry of Information (who later founded Granada Television) set out to produce a documentary meant to serve as irrefutable evidence of the Nazis’ atrocities. He enlisted an array of British experts, including editor Stewart McAllister, future cabinet minister Richard Crossman as writer, and Alfred Hitchcock as a treatment advisor. Despite the initial backing of both the British and US Governments, the film was shelved but has now been restored and completed by Imperial War Museums under its original name, “German Concentration Camps Factual Survey,” after 70 years.
