Orpheus

At the Café des Poètes in Paris, a confrontation ensues between the poet Orphée (Jean Marais) and a group of envious newcomers. In the chaos, rival poet Cègeste (Edouard Dermit) is killed, and a mysterious princess (María Casares) insists on taking Orphée and the body away in her elegant Rolls-Royce. Orphée soon finds himself in the eerie underworld, where the Princess reveals her true identity as Death. Remarkably, Orpheus manages to return to the world of the living, only to become fixated on the car radio. This film, “Orpheus” from 1950, forms the centerpiece of Cocteau’s Orphic Trilogy, surrounded by “The Blood of a Poet” (1930) and “Testament of Orpheus” (1960). Watch Orpheus right here.
