Overview
“Self Discovery for Social Survival” is a collaborative project merging surfing and music, produced by the Brooklyn record label Mexican Summer and Pilgrim Surf + Supply, a surf and outdoor brand based in New York. Across three distinct segments, filmed in the scenic locales of Mexico, the Maldives, and Iceland, the film follows musicians like Allah Las, Connan Mockasin, Andrew Van Wyngarden of MGMT, and Peaking Lights as they join forces with professional surfers. This cinematic journey explores the harmonious connection between sound, the ocean’s rhythms, the natural world, and the culture of each location. Narration is provided by the iconic avant-garde filmmaker Jonas Mekas, adding a poetic dimension to the experience. Watch “Self Discovery for Social Survival” online.
