Lead Balloon

Lead Balloon is a British TV series crafted by Open Mike Productions for BBC Four, envisioned and co-scripted by comedian Jack Dee alongside Pete Sinclair. The show features Dee as Rick Spleen, a jaded and misanthropic comedian who constantly grapples with minor irritations, failures, and humiliations. Raquel Cassidy, Sean Power, and Tony Gardner also have key roles. Airing its first six episodes on BBC Four in 2006, the show achieved the channel’s highest comedy ratings. Subsequent airings on BBC Two and BBC HD expanded its audience. A second season of eight episodes aired on BBC Two in November 2007, followed by a third season starting in November 2008. The fourth and final season aired from 31 May 2011 to 5 July on BBC Two. Critics likened it to the popular American series Curb Your Enthusiasm and praised its characters, especially Magda, the housekeeper from Eastern Europe. The inaugural series was made available on DVD in November 2007. The theme music, a rendition of “One Way Road” by Noel Gallagher, was performed by Paul Weller.
