Recess

Recess is an American animated TV show, conceived by Paul Germain and Joe Ansolabehere, and produced by Walt Disney Television Animation. The narrative follows six elementary students as they navigate their relationships with fellow classmates and teachers. The title is inspired by the free time during the school day when kids enjoy the playground, characteristic of North American culture. Central to the series is the children’s creation of their own mini-society, complete with governance and social classes, all within the typical school setting.

The show initially premiered on ABC from 1997 to 2001, with reruns delighting audiences on Disney Channel in the U.S. Its popularity led to distribution across numerous countries, including the UK, airing on channels like Toon Disney and Disney Channel UK. In 2001, Walt Disney Pictures unveiled the first movie, Recess: School’s Out, which was shown in theaters. Later in the same year, a follow-up film, Recess Christmas: Miracle on Third Street, was released directly to video. Two more direct-to-video sequels, Recess: Taking the Fifth Grade and Recess: All Growed Down, came out in 2003. The beloved characters even joined Lilo & Stitch: The Series for a special episode.
