Overview

Robot Wars, a British game show inspired by a US competition of the same name, captivated audiences on BBC Two from 1998 until 2003, later airing its final series on Channel 5 in 2003 and 2004. The show expanded globally with special series, such as Robot Wars Extreme Warriors in the U.S. for TNN and Dutch Robot Wars for the Netherlands. In 2002, the fourth UK series made its way to the United States under the title Robot Wars: Grand Champions, hosted by Joanie Laurer on TNN. By 2003, the roboteers had formed The Fighting Robot Association to continue engaging with new audiences through various competitions.

Teams of amateur and professional roboteers crafted their own robots to face off against each other in both friendly and competitive matches. They also had the daunting task of evading the “House Robots,” which were exempt from the same weight and weapon restrictions as their competitors. Robot Wars achieved viewership peaks of 4 million and found commercial success, particularly in its merchandising endeavors.
