St. Elsewhere

Overview
St. Elsewhere is an American medical drama series that aired on NBC from October 26, 1982, to May 25, 1988. The show featured Ed Flanders, Norman Lloyd, and William Daniels portraying experienced doctors who mentored young interns at a modest Boston hospital, helping them shape their futures through crucial medical and life decisions. Produced by MTM Enterprises, St. Elsewhere shared a network and similar ensemble cast style with Hill Street Blues, a police drama from the same era that also featured overlapping serialized storylines; this led to frequent comparisons between the two. Filming took place at CBS/MTM Studios, originally CBS/Fox Studios, with 20th Century Fox later acquiring the series rights in the 1990s after purchasing MTM Enterprises.
The show was celebrated for blending gritty realism with moments of dark humor, earning a dedicated fanbase over its six seasons and 137 episodes. It was particularly popular among the 18-49 age group, which advertisers found appealing for its young, affluent viewership. Garnering significant critical acclaim, St. Elsewhere won 13 Emmy Awards for its outstanding writing, acting, and directing. Recognized as a cultural touchstone, TV Guide ranked it #20 on their 2002 list of “The 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time” and heralded it as the best drama series of the 1980s in a 1993 issue.
