The Crystal Maze
Trailer
Overview
The Crystal Maze, a British game show produced by Chatsworth Television, aired on Channel 4 in the UK from February 15, 1990, to August 10, 1995. The show had annual series, initially hosted by Richard O’Brien for the first four and later by Ed Tudor-Pole for the last two. Each episode lasted an hour, including commercials. It was initially inspired by the French program Fort Boyard, created by Jacques Antoine, but due to set availability issues, British producer Malcolm Heyworth introduced themed zones to maintain visual intrigue and diversity.
Set in “The Crystal Maze”, the show featured four distinct zones, each representing different time periods or settings. Six contestants competed in various tasks to collect “time crystals”, which afforded them extra seconds in the ultimate challenge within “The Crystal Dome”, the maze’s focal point. Building the maze cost £250,000, and its area equated to about two football pitches. The program peaked as Channel 4’s most viewed with 4 to 6 million regular viewers. Voted the “greatest UK game show of all time” in 2006 and 2010 by UKGameshows.com readers, it’s lauded for its ambitious format that achieved great success.
