Solitary

In the United States, around 100,000 people are confined in solitary confinement, a situation that has even drawn the attention of figures like President Obama and the Pope. Tucked away in the remote Virginia countryside, Red Onion State Prison is located 300 miles away from the nearest city and is one of the more than 40 supermax facilities in the nation designed to house inmates in small cells for 23 hours each day. Captured over an entire year, this revealing documentary intertwines vivid prison visuals, accounts from correctional officers, and personal insights from the men living in isolation. Through their stories, the inmates reveal the circumstances that landed them behind bars and the mental battles they face daily. Solitary (2016) is streaming here.
