Set in South Africa in 1990, a pivotal year unfolds as Nelson Mandela prepares for his imminent release, but more importantly, it’s Spud Milton’s inaugural year at a prestigious boys-only boarding school. John Milton, known as Spud, hails from a modest background and earns a scholarship to this elite institution in Kwazulu-Natal. As he grapples with adjusting to life at the school, Spud finds himself amid peers with nicknames like Gecko, Rambo, Rain Man, and Mad Dog. During this transformative period, he begins his journey toward adulthood, a path that appears deceptively lengthy. As an only child, Spud contends with parents who act as if they’ve stepped out of a madcap tale and a granny whose memories are as faded as her soft-spoken spells. His father, a staunch anti-communist, imagines the family’s domestic worker is operating an illicit shebeen in her quarters, while his mother embodies a free spirit, plunging into embarrassing situations such as picking out Spud’s essentials at the local store.
