Sweet Thing

Billie and Nico experience an unpredictable existence with their father, filled with playful moments and uncomfortable times. His struggles with alcohol can shatter the illusion of a perfect family life, especially when tears begin to flow. Their mother, often absent from their lives and lacking responsibility, offers little support. A friendship with Malik, a boy Billie’s age, becomes their liberating force, setting them free from their confines. This marks the start of a journey filled with moments of true freedom and joy. The vibrant, emotion-filled lives of these three young souls are beautifully captured through kaleidoscopic black and white visuals, reflecting their personal concepts of childhood. Alexandre Rockwell’s “Sweet Thing (2020)” tells a moving story of camaraderie, deep love for cinema and Billie Holiday, and the allure of risk and adventure. This film is a must-watch.
