The Bastard

Ethiopian Daniel Hoek firmly believes his path to crime was set in motion by his Dutch father’s abandonment. Meanwhile, Joop Hoek, his Dutch father, is convinced his life would have taken a different turn had his own Dutch-Indonesian father not deserted him. “The Bastard” vividly illustrates two interwoven stories of an adult and his elderly parent, painting a striking picture of how destiny and genetics can shape a person’s life through the absence of a paternal figure. It’s a moving reflection on how these ancestral shadows affect both their lives deeply.
