The Boatman

Miguel is an exceptional coyote, focused and committed, with a flawless track record. His life is defined by the path of migrants: gravel back alleys, crumbled pavements, and ultimately, the river. Yet, despite his successful streak, Miguel knows death intimately. His moniker, “El Maldito,” hints at what unfolds, as he seems haunted by the spirits of those who have passed. He encounters them on desert roads, listens to their last confessions, and fulfills their final wishes. Like Miguel himself, his home is solitary, decorated with yellowed photographs reflecting a life devoted to helping his people find a new beginning. Signs point to an impending disruption of his quiet existence. A shocking accident by the roadside throws Miguel’s life into disarray when Elena, the sole survivor, recognizes him.
