The Comrades of Summer

Sparky Smith, portrayed by Joe Mantegna, had a good run as manager of the Seattle Mariners before a series of heated arguments with the team’s owner, played by Michael Lerner, led to his dismissal. Searching for any opportunity to coach, Sparky finds none, until a surprising offer comes from the Russian Sports Ministry, spearheaded by the charming Tanya, played by Natalya Negoda. They are seeking a coach for their Olympic baseball team, and Sparky seems to be the perfect candidate. Upon arriving in Russia, Sparky realizes the team consists mostly of athletes and hockey players who are unfamiliar with baseball. This sets the stage for comedic chaos as Sparky receives an invitation to bring his team to the United States for a match against his former club, the Mariners.
