The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson

Renowned as a “street queen,” Marsha P. Johnson was an iconic presence in the gay hub of New York City, championing LGBT pride from the Stonewall era. Together with fellow trans legend Sylvia Rivera, she co-founded the Street Transvestites Action Revolutionaries (S.T.A.R.), a pivotal trans activist group stationed in NYC’s vibrant Greenwich Village. Though the NYPD ruled her death in 1992 as a suicide, her friends have always challenged that conclusion. Framed as a mystery, this documentary casts activist Victoria Cruz in the role of both investigator and viewer’s guide, celebrating Johnson’s enduring impact while probing the truth behind her mysterious demise.
