The Draughtsman’s Contract

Peter Greenaway’s first foray into fiction, following the mockumentary *The Falls*, garnered instant acclaim and quickly established his reputation as a filmmaker. British critics hailed it as one of the most groundbreaking films of the 1980s. Set in the director’s cherished 17th century, the story follows the ambitious young artist, Mr. Neville (played by Anthony Higgins), who is commissioned by Mrs. Herbert (Janet Suzman) to create 12 detailed drawings of her estate. Beyond monetary compensation, the agreement includes certain intimate favors that Mrs. Herbert promises to Mr. Neville in her husband’s absence. Confident in his knack for manipulation, Mr. Neville unexpectedly finds himself ensnared in an intricate plot devised by others. The film unfolds as an intellectually compelling puzzle, reminiscent of the cerebral challenges popular in that era. *The Draughtsman’s Contract (1982)* is available to stream for free.
