The Grown Ups

Anita, Rita, Ricardo, and Andrés have been part of a school for children with Down syndrome for four decades. They have grown weary of the predictable and secure atmosphere around them. Now in their late 40s, they find their work at the school bakery to be insufficiently stimulating. Moreover, they crave personal freedom and a more independent life. Anita and Andrés, who are deeply in love, still reside with their families, yet they dream of having a private space, tying the knot, and starting their own family. Unfortunately, the societal infrastructure doesn’t support their quest for greater independence. Although they’ve been trained to be “responsible adults,” they still rely on others for decision-making, which is a continual source of frustration for them.
