The Metropolitan Opera: Rigoletto

Michael Mayer’s celebrated rendition of Verdi’s timeless opera, originally introduced in the 2012–13 season, transposes the story to the vibrant setting of 1960s Las Vegas, a place dominated by money and influential, merciless men. In this narrative, Piotr Beczała takes on the role of the Duke, a charismatic performer and casino owner who pursues his desires at any cost. Željko Lučić embodies Rigoletto, the Duke’s jester and confidant, while Diana Damrau portrays Gilda, Rigoletto’s pure-hearted daughter. When the Duke ensnares Gilda under his charms, Rigoletto embarks on a fateful quest for vengeance that spirals into tragedy. The assassin Sparafucile is deftly portrayed by Štefan Kocán, with Michele Mariotti leading the performance. Watch The Metropolitan Opera: Rigoletto (2013) streaming online here.
