The Red Room

Hélène Noris, a young woman with bourgeois roots from Belgium, is disturbed by her romantic past with Tamara, who is now married to Hélène’s father. She’s caught between lingering desire and frustration over Tamara’s conventional existence, feeling out of place in the close-knit community she calls home. As part of a plan to boost his social standing, her stepfather René invites Jean Gerfaud, a director from Paris, to produce a cutting-edge version of Tartuffe. Tamara shows interest in Gerfaud, but it’s Hélène who captures his affection first. This sparks a heated, tumultuous affair filled with love, envy, and aspiration. The daring premiere causes a scandal, and Jean decides to wed Hélène, igniting Tamara’s anger. However, Hélène’s rebellious spirit leads her to betray Jean with a soldier. Enraged and humiliated, Jean confronts her in the “red room,” which has transformed from a symbol of their love to the site of their downfall.
