The Rookie

Jim Morris’s earlier baseball dreams were crushed when a shoulder injury dashed his hopes of advancing beyond the minor leagues twelve years ago. In his new life as a high school chemistry teacher and baseball coach in Texas, Jim strikes a deal with his team: if they clinch the district championship, he’ll pursue tryouts with a major league organization. This wager drives the team to exceed expectations, soaring from last place to state champions for the first time ever. Keeping his promise, Jim faces skepticism at the tryouts—until he ascends the mound and astonishes everyone with a series of 98 mph fastballs. These performances secure him a minor-league deal with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Jim still faces obstacles before reaching the majors, but with his rekindled enthusiasm, the possibilities seem limitless.
