The Second Mother

After entrusting her daughter Jessica to relatives in a small town in Pernambuco, Val spends over a decade working as a nanny for Fabinho in São Paulo. While she achieves financial security, she struggles with the guilt of not having raised Jessica herself. As Fabinho prepares for his university entrance exams, Jessica reenters Val’s life, seemingly extending an opportunity for reconciliation. However, having been brought up with a sense of independence, Jessica’s presence disrupts Val’s established routine. With precision and humor, director Anna Muylaert examines the deep-seated, yet subtle class structures and the transformative potential of the younger generation to challenge the status quo.
