Wadjda

In the suburbs of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, we meet Wadjda, a spirited 10-year-old girl with an entrepreneurial spirit who endlessly tests the limits of the conservative world around her. She is determined and full of life, eager to explore the freedoms she can inch towards amidst societal constraints. When an argument ensues with her friend Abdullah—a neighborhood boy with whom she isn’t supposed to fraternize—Wadjda becomes entranced by a stunning green bicycle that she believes will allow her to outpace Abdullah in a race. Despite her mother’s concerns about societal norms that deem bicycles inappropriate for girls, Wadjda resolves to earn the money herself to buy it.
