Waiting for August

Georgiana Halmac is about to celebrate her 15th birthday this winter, yet she finds herself having to put aside typical teenage aspirations. Her mother, currently unemployed, has relocated to Torino in search of a job, leaving Georgiana responsible for her six siblings within a social housing apartment on the fringes of Bacau, Romania. Straddling the line between youth and adult duties, Georgiana draws parenting wisdom from television and sporadic phone conversations with her mom, while facing her own school-related challenges. At the same time, she must navigate the scrutiny of critical neighbors who threaten to involve social services. In “Waiting for August (2014),” Georgiana remarkably maintains serenity and poise, skillfully keeping her world in a delicate equilibrium.
