Waiting for the Messiah

Set in 1999, during the collapse of Argentina’s peso, “Waiting for the Messiah (2000)” follows Ariel, a young man from Buenos Aires’ Jewish community. As he navigates his mother’s terminal illness, Ariel lands a job as a night-time surveillance camera monitor and grapples with his curiosity about intimacy. In a parallel storyline, Santamaria, a middle-aged man, faces unemployment after losing his banking job and being abandoned by his wife. He scours dumpsters for lost wallets to return to their rightful owners. Ariel shares Santamaria’s poignant journey with a TV reporter, Laura, who’s in a relationship with another woman but might have room for something new. Ariel finds himself drawn to Laura, while Santamaria courts Elsa, whose husband is incarcerated. With Christmas and Hanukkah fast approaching, the question lingers: can these lonely souls forge meaningful connections?
